A former doctor’s surgery, the Kurashiki Mingeikan Minami no Yado has since been restored as an accommodation facility, and now consists of three different guest accommodations – the Gawahan no Yado (featured here), the Naka no Yado and the Oku no Yado. Located between the Kurashiki Mingeikan (Japan Folk Crafts Museum) and the Japan Folk Toy Museum, all three guest accommodations contained within the Mingeikan Minami no Yado are perfect places to enjoy a relaxing stay, fully immersed within the rich history and culture of their neighbouring establishments.
Comprising the upper floor of a merchant’s house built in the Meiji period (1868-1912), the Gawahan no Yado features lattice windows that face the riverside, offering pleasant views of the murmuring river and rows of traditional townhouses. Its low, sloping ceiling – characteristic of loft spaces – creates a calm and relaxing ambience.
With windows overlooking the river and the institute’s building, the accommodation features custom made sofa mats by Kurashiki Honzome Teori Laboratory, as well as iron-mordanted quince flooring in the living room and bedroom. The thick ceiling beams bring the room neatly together, and a skylight located in the bathroom offers views of the Kurashiki sky.

「倉敷民藝館南 川畔の宿」は、明治期に建てられた商家と伝えられる建物の２階部分を改修した宿です。川沿いに面した格子窓からは、川のせせらぎと軒を連ねる町家を眺望でき、小屋裏ならではの勾配のある低い天井が落ち着ついた空間を生み出します。
ソファマットは倉敷本染手織研究所によるもの。窓からは倉敷川の眺めとともに、同研究所の建物を臨むことができます。リビングとベットルームの床はカリンの鉄媒染。それぞれの空間をつなげることで、太い棟木、小屋組みの構造を堪能できる空間に仕上げました。
バスルームの天窓からは倉敷の空を見上げることができます。
