A renovated rice storehouse from the late Edo period, the Gangukan Kura no Yado is considered to be the oldest among the group of buildings that make up the Japan Folk Toy Museum (Gangukan). Believed to have never been moved since it was first built, the building is situated among other traditional buildings along the Kurashiki riverside, and stands as a valuable property that conveys the historic townscape of Japan’s Edo period. From the windows facing the Kurashiki River, the Minamoto townscape and Mt. Mukoyama in the distance can be seen.
The Japan Folk Toy Museum is a privately-run museum specialising in local toys, which collects and exhibits toys made in various parts of Japan from the Edo period to the early Showa period. The storehouse later served as an exhibition room after the museum was opened in 1967, on the recommendation of Kichinosuke Tonomura – the first director of the Kurashiki Mingeikan (Folk Crafts Museum). It is our hope that guests can enjoy a relaxing stay, whilst feeling the heart and soul of the local toys displayed, as well as the surrounding history and culture of the region.
日本郷土玩具館の建物群の中で最も古いとされる江戸後期の米蔵を改修した一棟貸の宿です。
倉敷川畔の伝統的建造物群の中でも、創建当初から移築がなされていない蔵の一つと考えられ、江戸の町並みを伝える貴重な建造物となっています。
倉敷川に面する窓から、みなもと街並み、遠くには向山を望むことができます。

日本郷土玩具館は、江戸期から昭和初期にかけて日本各地で作られていた郷土玩具を蒐集、展示する民営の郷土玩具専門の博物館です。
当宿の蔵は、昭和42年(1967)、同館が倉敷民藝館の初代館長 外村吉之助のすすめにより開設された際に、最初の展示室となった、はじまりの場所でもあります。
郷土玩具によせれらた人々の祈りや願い、地域の歴史と文化を感じながら、ゆったりとした時間をお過ごしいただけましたら幸いです。
